I have never seen this before and I doubt I will ever see it again. A prime example happened to me this year when I was sitting in my Thinking Chair and looked up to see a pair of herring gulls flying over my yard. Lately I have referred to these birds as “X-factor” species the birds that you couldn’t have predicted seeing in a million years.
This is called a “big year” and I haven’t attempted such a thing yet…but someday I might.Īnyway, these lists always seem to come down to rare, or unexpected, species that push you over the line. The grand question of all birding questions is how many bird species you can see in a calendar year. How many birds can I see in a day? How many species of warblers can I see in May? How many species have I seen in my life? These are all questions that have undoubtedly crossed your mind at least once. The birders out there will understand the notion of setting these little goals.
But for all I know, Halloween day, which was yesterday, proved to be the day that helped me finally break that record. At the time of this column’s composition I was stuck at 38 species again. The old record of 38 species was originally set in 2012 and then it was tied again just last year. October was a month for which there was a little excitement generated by the prospect of setting a new personal record for the number of bird species observed in my yard.
